What to see in Calabria: the Cliff of the Olive Tree, the symbol of Palmi
The Cliff of the Olive Tree is situated in Palmi, in the locality of Tonnara, in a stretch of sea on the Costa Viola. It is an islet rock that rises a few metres from the coast, but is not linked to it, on whose summit an olive tree was born and grew, hence its name. In the local dialect it is known as Luvareddhra. An olive tree has also grown on another nearby rock and this group of rocks is called Agliastro rocks (from the dialectal word Agghjastru, meaning 'with oleaster') in the IGM cartography.
The Cliff
The plant is an olive tree (Olea europea L.), class Magnoliopsida, order Scrophularikales, family Oleaceae, called a wild olive tree, which is fairly common in the area. The age of the old plant can reasonably be given as several centuries.
The trunk and the plant itself constitute a kind of 'natural monument' that has always characterised the rock and given it its name. The plant is a natural "sculptural unicum", with a play of empty and full spaces, of light and transparency, formed by the particular intertwining of its branches, its roots and the same twisted trunk polished by time, embellished by the material shaped by nature, unchallenged for centuries, made of wind, salt, sun and rain.
On 31 December 1979, rocks fell from the top of the rock, breaking some of the plant's roots.
On 16 June 2012, the Palmese association Aura Loci secured the old plant and planted a sapling of the same species.

The second cliff with olive tree
On the rock between the mainland and the aforementioned 'Scoglio dell'Ulivo', an olive tree also grew on top during the 20th century. The youth of this plant can be seen on postcards from the beginning of the 20th century, on which it is not present. During this period, the plant formed a trunk with a stump about one-sixth the size of the more famous and older one.

The Ulivo rock is the central subject of the "Palmi" stamp, issued by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in 1987 as part of the "tourism" series (14th edition). The design is by Egidio Vangelli and had a circulation of 5 million copies.
