What to see in italy: Palmi the City of Varia, the UNESCO Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

what-to-see-in-Italy-palmi

Among our recommendations on what to see in Calabria, we present Palmi

Palmi, a city rich in history and charm, has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and was founded in 951 by refugees from Tauriana. Despite the devastating earthquakes that have struck it over the centuries, Palmi has always risen again more beautiful and captivating. The last earthquake in 1908 destroyed it completely, but did not extinguish its soul.

Situated on a terrace 228 metres above sea level, Palmi lies on an ancient marine beach on the western side of Calabria, between Aspromonte and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The highest point is Mount Sant'Elia, 582 metres above sea level, and its beaches, from Marinella to Tonnara, ravines and caves, crown the northern part of the purple coast.

The town is shrouded in ancient legends, such as that of the beautiful young widow Canfora, abducted by the Saracens and thrown into the sea, who turned into a mermaid and whose melancholic song is still heard today by the fishermen of the Purple Coast. All this against a breathtaking panoramic backdrop, stretching from Capo Vaticano to Stromboli, passing through the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands and up to the heights of Mount Etna, after touching the southernmost part of Calabria in the Strait of Messina

House of culture "Leonida Repaci"

With a privileged position on the hill and a large garden adorned with bronze sculptures and Roman columns, the modern and functional building houses a vast collection of art and culture including a library with over 100,000 volumes, a Civic Museum of Ethnography and Folklore recognized by 'UNESCO, a Municipal Antiquarium, Museums dedicated to Francesco Cilea and Nicola Antonio Manfroce, a investigating judge. Municipal Villa "Giuseppe Mazzini

The 'Giuseppe Mazzini' municipal villa is Palmi's public garden and is included in the list of national monuments. The villa stands in the city centre and from its balcony you can admire the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Straits of Messina, the Aeolian Islands, Bagnara Calabra and Scilla.

It is an enchanting place, opened in 1870. With a spectacular view stretching from Capo Vaticano to the Aeolian Islands, it ideally embraces Calabria and Sicily separated by the Strait of Messina. Designed by the botanist and agronomist Enrico Fehr in 1847, it was immortalised in a painting by the English writer and painter Edward Lear. Equipped with night lighting, it is dedicated to Giuseppe Mazzini and contains various botanical species including American maple, Californian palm, stone pine, cycas, and a rare specimen of the antiscimian tree native to Peru. It also includes a stage for music, a monumental fountain and busts of Palmese and national personalities. In August, during the celebrations of the Varia, elections of the animeddha and the Padreterno are held in the garden.

Leonida Repaci was an Italian writer, essayist, poet, playwright, painter and anti-fascist.
He edited several newspapers and founded the Viareggio Literary Prize; not least, Federico Fellini chose him for a part in the film La Dolce Vita. Repaci wrote for the theatre and was inspired by his beloved homeland to which he often returned to conceive intimate stories with a familiar flavour, such as the Rupe Brothers cycle and Racconti della mia Calabria. After the intellectual's death, the Pietrosa house was abandoned for years, until it was decided to carry out a complete restoration with funding from the Calabria Region.

Piazza I Maggio is the beating heart of Palmi, a meeting place to celebrate important religious, political, sporting and cultural events. Built in the 17th century to meet the needs of the city market, it was the focus of the city's reconstruction following the earthquakes of 1783, 1894 and 1908.  Originally featuring a fountain in the centre and a granite mezzarole for measuring goods, it was named 'Market Square' for its original function.

The Tracciolino trail

Explore the wild beauty of the Costa Viola with the Tracciolino di Palmi hiking trail, a sheer drop to the sea connecting Palmi and Bagnara. One of the most evocative trekking trails in the Calabria region, the Tracciolino winds its way through the intense colours and scents of the Mediterranean maquis, offering breathtaking views. For the most part, the trail runs halfway up the hillside, with an average altitude of 300 metres on the flank of Monte Sant'Elia, offering along the way the possibility of admiring romantic beaches set like pearls among the cliffs. Such as Marinella, Sansebastiano, Cala Leone and Cala janculla, often awarded the Blue Flag by Legambiente, and listed among the 10 most beautiful beaches in Italy. The Tracciolino trail is suitable for those with a minimum of trekking training, with only a few more exposed but easily surmountable stretches, so it is suitable for everyone. As there are no signposts, it is however advisable to be accompanied by a local guide. The Tracciolino trail starts in Palmi and there are three ways to walk it, two of which are 10 km and 14 km loops.

Port Oreste (ROVAGLIOSO)

Be enchanted by the wild beauty of Cala Rovaglioso, a natural inlet on the Costa Viola, declared one of Italy's seventeen dream places by the environmental association Legambiente. Reached via a flight of steps set amidst centuries-old olive groves and vines, the beach is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with a sheer cliff overlooking the sea covered in orange and prickly pear trees. Also known as Porto Oreste, for the legend Orestes son of the Greek King Agamemnon, it offers a unique diving experience with a freshwater spring on the seabed. Cala Rovaglioso is one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, despite its small size, but with a particularly clean sea rich in fish. There are no bathing establishments but only unspoilt nature, for an unforgettable experience.

 Archaeological Park of the Tauriani

Discover the ancient history of Calabria with the Tauriani Archaeological Park, an extraordinary site in a strategic location that has been frequented by man since the Neolithic period, some 5000 years ago. Permanent settlements began in the Middle Bronze Age and in the fourth century B.C. an Italic people, the Tauriani, settled in the area of Palmi, founding a city, traces of which can still be seen today inside the park that takes its name. The park includes traces of the first Italic settlement, dating back to the fourth and third centuries B.C., and the House of the Mosaic, dating back to the second and first centuries B.C., in which a splendid mosaic depicting a bear-hunting scene and bronze fragments with silver inserts were found. In addition, there are important Roman remains dating back to the imperial era. The park also includes the black stone tower, watercoloured in the valuable Carratelli codex and used for centuries as a defensive system against Saracen fleets, and the complex of San Fantino Cavallaro, the oldest saint in Calabria.

Mount Saint Elias

Sant'elia owes its name to Sant'elia juniore, who lived in this area in the year 884 A.D. He had a church built, which unfortunately fell into disrepair due to repeated seismic events. Nestled on the slopes of Sant'elia, we find Palmi.

From its terraces one can enjoy one of the most impressive views in the world. What leaves one breathless is, above all, the cista of Etna (and its still active volcanoes), volcano and Stromboli, the Gioia Tauro plain, Monte poro and Capo Vaticano

Marinella of Palmi

La Marinella di Palmi is an enchanting beach set in the striking cliffs of Palmi. The beach is composed of white gravel and overlooked by the mountainous bastion of Sant'Elia, offering a wild and unspoilt panorama. The turquoise sea is clear and transparent, with sandy and rocky seabeds rich in marine life, making it an ideal destination for divers. Marina di Palmi is a small fishing village consisting of a few houses and a small beach, and in 2014 it was awarded 3 blue sails by Legambiente, placing it third in Calabria for its beauty. It was the setting for important historical events such as the landing of the Garibaldini, the nefarious episode of the pirate Dragut, and the embarkation of King Charles III of Spain, on his way to Palermo for his coronation as King of Naples and Sicily.

Pignarelle caves

The Pignarelle caves are a rock settlement of Byzantine monastic origin, carved out of sandstone by the monks themselves between the 6th and 8th centuries. The choice of this location in Palmi, Calabria, by the Byzantine monks was due to the iconoclastic persecutions proclaimed by Emperor Leo and the occupation of Sicily by the Saracens. The complex is located on a steep ridge hidden by thick vegetation and offers a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretching from the Strait of Messina to the Vatican. The complex consists of several caves on different levels, with the entrance facing north. Inside, side corridors flow into a central one forming a Greek cross. There are steps, niches and beds carved into the stone.

Trachina Caves

The Cave of Trachina, translated from the ancient Phoenician language as 'place where fish are salted', is a fascinating archaeological discovery located in the locality of the same name in the municipality of Palmi. Finds dating back to the Bronze Age and Mesohelladic period found inside the cave give us a better understanding of the relations between the local populations of the time and the Aegean populations. Archaeologists suspect that the cave was used as early as the Early Bronze Age, and excavations in 1955 discovered that it was also used in medieval, modern and contemporary times as a shelter for flocks. The site where the cave is located is a large rock shelter in a high cliff on the Purple Coast, which is currently separated from the sea by farmland. From the cave, one can admire the impressive view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the straits to Cape Vaticano and the Aeolian Islands. It has also been identified as Ulysses' cave according to the suggestive hypothesis presented in the article 'On Ulysses' route'.

The beach of Palmi and the Olive Tree Rock

The olive rock is a symbol of Palmi, a protected asset due to its antiquity and unique shape. It is a natural monument that celebrates the Mediterranean and offers a breathtaking view with a clear sea, colourful sunsets and a peaceful atmosphere.

The island rock is another tourist attraction in Palmi, with a wide beach, children's playground, bars and restaurants. It is linked to the legend of Donna Canfora, a noblewoman kidnapped by Saracen pirates.

The Pietre Nere beach is long and wide, with soft, light-coloured sand ideal for walking or playing racquetball, sloping seabed for swimming and a spectacular view of the olive rock and Capo Vaticano. Suitable for families, groups of friends and couples seeking relaxation.

The "Varia of Palmi"

The varia di Palmi is an exciting experience that transports you into a world of faith and tradition. What to see in Calabria? You cannot miss a visit to this unique event that features a gigantic 16-metre high sacred chariot, transported by no less than 200 people, representing Mary's ascent to heaven and the entire universe. A number of figures representing the eternal father, the animella, apostles and angels also take their places on the float. The festival, which attracts thousands of visitors every edition, has been included in the UNESCO list of Oral and Material Heritage of Humanity and is one of the most important celebrations in Calabria. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of August and is dedicated to Maria Santissima della lettera, the co-patron saint of the city. The history of the varia begins in 1582 when the Senate of Messina donated a precious hair of the Madonna to the inhabitants of Palmi as a sign of gratitude for the hospitality offered to the people of Messina affected by the plague that had claimed thousands of victims.
