WHAT TO SEE IN ITALY: SCILLA, THE EAGLE OF THE TYRRHENIAN SEA

Calabria, located in the southern region of Italy, is known for its natural beauty and rich history. One of the most striking places to visit in this region is Scilla, nicknamed 'the Eagle of the Tyrrhenian Sea' due to its sheer position above the sea. This ancient city offers breathtaking views, pristine beaches and a vibrant local culture. In this article we explore the best places to visit in Scilla, where you can discover the beauty of Calabria.

SCILLA

Scilla, a little pearl of the Costa Viola, is an eternal meeting of myth and beauty. The town is divided into three districts: Marina Grande, San Giorgio and Chianalea, all linked to the Rocca on which the majestic Castle stands. One of the most picturesque villages in Calabria, it is positioned like an amphitheatre sloping down towards the bays of Marina Grande and Chianalea; the latter is a fishing village. Important tourist centre of the Costa Viola. Scilla, known as Aquila del Tirreno (Tyrrhenian Eagle), when observed from above it takes the form of an eagle with outstretched wings, the central body of which is the high part of the seaside village.

RUFFO CASTLE

BEACH OF SCILLA - MARINA GRANDE

The Spiaggia delle Sirene (Siren's Beach) in Scilla is situated just behind the delightful little town of the same name, nestled between the Ruffo Castle and the rocky Punta Pacì, in a landscape of rare beauty and suggestion. It is a wonderful beach of coarse sand and gravel, hundreds of metres long and washed by a beautiful crystal clear sea, extraordinarily transparent thanks to its gravelly seabed. Ideal for families with children, the beach is well equipped, offers kiosks, bars, a small grocery store in the street in the centre of town and numerous restaurants with sea views, as well as the possibility of renting several flats and holiday homes nearby.

SAINT GIORGIO OF SCYLLA

The beating heart of Scilla, known as San Giorgio, stretches around the famous Piazza San Rocco. This square is a marvel for the eyes, built on a rocky ridge, offering a spectacular sea view of the Strait of Messina. From here, you can admire Sicily, Cape Milazzo and even some of the Aeolian Islands, such as Lipari and Panarea, and Stromboli. The square is also home to the Church of San Rocco, the city's patron saint, and the Palazzo Comunale. In the historical centre, you will also find the ancient village of Bastia, characterised by small houses facing narrow alleys. Some elements of the original architecture are still visible in the existing buildings, including the lowered arches and typical round windows. This historic centre is a unique experience not to be missed by anyone visiting Calabria.
