WHAT TO SEE IN ITALY

WHAT TO SEE IN ITALY:

HISTORICAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL ITINERARY IN PALMI, CALABRIA.

The itinerary includes a guided tour of the most evocative areas of Palmi, steeped in history and legend.

WE WILL VISIT:

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF THE TAURIANI AND CRYPT OF SAN FANTINO

Departure and visit to Taureana  of  Palmi, Archaeological Park of the TaurIanI where there are remains of the ancient Italic population with related Roman remains. The plateau where the archaeological park is located is situated on a small hill, here you can enjoy a beautiful view surrounded by olive groves and the surrounding Mediterranean nature.

Visit the crypt of San Fantino (the first saint of Calabria) who died in 336 AD.

San Fantino is the oldest historically proven saint of Calabria.

He was born in Taureana di Palmi (Rc) in 294 AD, where he died in 336, on 24 July, the day on which his memory is celebrated. The crypt where the saint died is still open to visitors and is located inside an ancient Roman cistern, with very fine Orthodox frescoes (iconographies). Inside the crypt there is still an active well of spring water. The water has beneficial characteristics.

Duration: 2.30 hours

Packed lunch in the Archaeological Park

Duration: 1.30 hours

After lunch we continue the tour with Marinella, Rovaglioso and the caves of  Trachina.

MARINELLA of PALMI

Marina di Palmi (commonly called Marinella), is a fishing village in Palmi consisting of a few houses and a small beach in front of a bay enclosed by high spurs of rock. The beauty of the bay contributed, in 2014, to Legambiente's awarding of 3 blue sails to the town of Palmi, putting the town in third place in all of Calabria.

We will stop at the Belvedere Motta.
From the viewpoint it is possible to admire, in addition to the Bay of Marinella below and Mount Sant'Elia above, the entire Viola coastline in its entirety, from Punta Pezzo di Palmi to the Strait of Messina, with Sicily and the Aeolian Islands in the background. The towns of Bagnara Calabra and Scilla are particularly visible.
Here we will recount the historical events linked to the landing of the Garibaldini and the terrible Corsair Dragut.
We will visit the place where the Saracen pirates were killed, where there is a small aedicule with a niche in which an image of the Madonna del Carmine with the souls in purgatory is painted. This shrine is called by the locals as the 'cross of the dead', in memory of the massacre of the Turks and some of the inhabitants of Palmi. There, about two hundred metres south of the aforementioned shrine, is the 'stone of the dragon'.

Rovaglioso called also Porto Oreste

Today, Cala Rovaglioso is one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Italy according to the Travel 365 blog and among the 17 beaches awarded in the Legambiente 'La più bella sei tu' (The most beautiful is you) competition.

One of the most evocative locations on the Italian Tyrrhenian coast, Rovaglioso is a mix of myth, history and natural beauty that has remained untouched by human contamination.

Porto Oreste is also the place where, according to legend and ancient writings, Oreste, the son of the Mycenaean king Agamemnon, landed, and we will recount the events linked to this place.

CAVE OF TRACHINA

The Trachina cave is located in the territory of Palmi (IGM F 245 II SE), a few tens of metres from the Tyrrhenian coast. It is a vast natural cavity, very irregular in shape, with two entrances to the north and to the south that are rather uneven.

"The cave opens up in the granite rocky bank that seems to have been eroded by the waves of the sea.

The findings, dating from the Bronze Age and the Helladic Period, found in the cave can further clarify the relations that took place between the local populations of the time and the Aegean populations.

The artefacts found in the cave are mainly ceramics from the late Bronze Age phase while some sherds can be interpreted as imports from the Aegean area. This suggests that the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria was part of the Mycenaean trade routes.

Effective total duration: 5/6 hours
