COSENZA AND ITS PROVINCE  IN CALABRIA

Cosenza is the main city of the homonymous province in Calabria. Known as the "Athens of Calabria" for its rich cultural tradition, Cosenza offers numerous points of interest to explore both in its historic center and in the surrounding areas. However, the province of Cosenza encloses many other wonders to visit.

The heart of Cosenza is its historic center, characterized by narrow streets and squares where you can admire historical buildings and churches


Not to be missed is the Cathedral, with its Gothic facade and Baroque interior. Nearby stands the majestic Swabian Castle, a symbol of the city. Other must-visit stops include Piazza dei Bruzi with the fountain, Palazzo Arnone and the National Gallery, and the Rendano Theater. Additionally, the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi and the Monastery are noteworthy, with the complex also housing the Chapel of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Cosenza also offers a modern side, with parks, gardens, and tree-lined avenues along the Crati and Busento rivers that run through the city. A stroll along Corso Mazzini, an elegant shopping street, is also not to be missed.

The Province of Cosenza

The Province of Cosenza is rich in picturesque villages, mountains, and wonderful coastlines. To the north, the SILA mountains, among the wildest in Italy, extend, while to the south, the Tyrrhenian coast offers dreamy beaches. The Province of Cosenza, in Calabria, is a treasure trove of picturesque villages steeped in history. Here are some of the most beautiful ones:

Cosenza Vecchia: Known as the "city of 7 hills," similar to Rome, it is located on the banks of the Crati River. Its historic center is a concentration of history and culture, bearing witness to Roman, Gothic, Byzantine, and Norman dominations.

Aieta: This village, part of the Pollino National Park, is embraced by a Renaissance palace built by the Martirano family and expanded by the Cosentino marquises. Its narrow streets tell ancient stories.

Buonvicino: Clinging to a rocky spur in the Pollino National Park, Buonvicino is home to the De Paola palace of the barons of Malvito, a place of beauty and history.

Civita: Founded in 1471 by Albanians fleeing the Turks, Civita stands on the ruins of the castrum Sancti Salvatoris. Its history is captivating, and its streets narrate a glorious past.

Fiumefreddo Bruzio: With its historic center overlooking the Tyrrhenian Coast, Fiumefreddo Bruzio offers breathtaking views. The Norman castle and the abbey of Forte Laudato are just a few of its treasures.

Among the other villages to visit, we can mention Rende, with its medieval historic center, and San Giovanni in Fiore, known for its monumental tree. A trip to Montalto Uffugo to admire the panorama from the Norman castle is a must.

BEACHES OF COSENZA AND PROVINCE

The province of Cosenza, in Calabria, is a coastal gem with breathtaking beaches. Here are some of the most beautiful ones:

Roseto Capo Spulico Beach: The waters are azure and transparent, and the beach is made up of rocks and pebbles. Remember to bring beach shoes for comfortable walking.

Trebisacce Beach: Here, you will find a free beach with pebbles and small stones gently sloping towards the sea.

Praia a Mare: This location offers a spectacular view of the Island of Dino and crystal-clear waters.

Marina di Fuscaldo Beach: A perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun.

Coreca Beach: A charming option with a view of the Ionian Sea.

These beaches, bathed by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea, are a paradise for sea and nature lovers.

Enogastronomy

The cuisine of Cosenza and Calabria is rich in specialties based on local products. To taste are the famous Diamante IGP chili peppers, olives, and cured meats. Among the typical first courses, stand out ferret macaroni and giancaleone pasta. The main courses are based on meat, lamb, and kid. Not to forget the desserts, such as pitta 'mpigliata and licorice from Rossano. Finally, excellent wines like Greco di Tufo and Cirò.

This is just a brief overview of Cosenza and its rich province. A territory with a thousand facets to discover with a vacation dedicated to art, nature, and enogastronomy.

Here are some castles and historic residences in the province of Cosenza:

Norman-Swabian Castle of Cosenza: This medieval fortress is located on Pancrazio Hill at 383 meters above sea level. It is a place of culture and history, open to visitors.

Amantea Castle: Located in the city of the same name, it was an important stronghold under various rulers over the centuries. Unfortunately, it suffered damage during the earthquakes of 1638 and 1783.

Morano Calabro Castle: Situated on a hill with breathtaking views, it offers wonderful ruins to admire.

Oriolo Castle: A long history told within its halls, accompanied by details known only to the custodians.

Medieval Castle of Cleto: This village, complete with a castle, is charming.

Tasting of typical products: Start your journey with a visit to local trattorias to savor Sila's products, such as mushrooms, cured meats, traditional oil, and bread. Try it to believe it! 🍽️
